The adsorption and desorption of charged species on graphene and graphene-related materials are studied using a density-functional tight-binding (DFTB) methodology coupled with classical and quantum-mechanical calculations. Our study includes structural analysis and electronic properties of two differently charged species, i.e., hydrogen, as a probe of neutral species, and a positively charged tetra-anion, i.e., [C6H5](4-), as a probe of negative species, adsorbed onto the surface of graphene and graphene-related materials. The adsorption energies obtained show a clear graphene-like behavior for the neutral species and a non-graphene-like behavior for the tetra-anion charge-state and that this difference is mainly governed by the effects of the electrostatic field. The motion of the adsorption species across the surface is studied using a quantum-mechanical reactive force-field scheme. The calculations show that the atomic motion on graphene is much more facile than on graphene-related materials and in fact, there are no real barriers for the adsorption/desorption processes.
